Union General Francis Murray made the Inn his lodging during the Revolutionary War. The site became a gathering place for those fighting for the colonists' cause.
Chillion W. Higgs, a member of the Newtown Temperance Society, became the new proprietor. He dubbed it "The Sign of the Good Samaritan" and served only mineral water, ginger beer and lemonade — a far cry from today's full-service bar.
